In the Web2 era, individuals were primarily passive consumers, viewing content like videos, images, and music on websites and apps. This limited their role to that of a spectator. Traditionally, digital art could be endlessly copied, which undermined concepts of ownership and scarcity. Blockchain technology, however, provides each digital artwork with a unique proof of ownership through NFTs, establishing it as a distinct form of property. Now, users can view a work and own it. In the secondary market, this ownership allows them to trade, use as collateral, or integrate NFTs into their social identity.
This same principle of tokenized ownership is now being applied to physical assets, bringing traditional investments like gold into the Web3 space, enabling access through digital forms such as Matrixdock's XAUm. It is backed by 99.99% purity LBMA-accredited gold. Each token represents one troy ounce of gold stored in secure vaults in Asia and offers physical redemption options. XAUm is a fungible ERC-20 token. In addition, with NFT technology, holders can wrap the corresponding amount of XAUm into a BullionNFT that references a specific bar (with on-chain traits like serial number, vault, and refiner). The NFT can later be unwrapped back into XAUm. This brings an additional layer of transparency and auditability to tokenized gold within the Web3 ecosystem.
